Whereas the art-fair insanity overpowered the scene in Manhattan final week, the ripened energies of the late summer season season within the Hudson Valley added an ideal contact to a cheerful opening for “Textual content” at Joyce Goldstein Gallery in mid-September.

Goldstein—an astute gallerist, artist, and doyenne of her technology—gracefully greeted the mingling crowd whereas seated at her desk behind her charming, one-room area. Based in New York Metropolis in 1992 and in Chatham in 2005, this quaint spot on the fringe of city is a neighborhood gem. Curated by Eric Wolf—a painter and designer who studied at RISD and has exhibited broadly, together with Salon 94 and Barbara Gladstone Gallery—”Textual content” is his second presentation at Joyce Goldstein Gallery. The present is a mixture of work, drawings, collage, books, and small sculptures by 38 artists, most of whom reside within the Hudson Valley.

With language because the baseline for this vigorous exhibit, the vary of artworks provide an encounter with the provocative and persuasive nature of phrases, turning them right into a protean muse of each selection. A rainbow-colored vinyl LP titled Hidden Wheel of Fortune (2022) by Ori Alon-Ray, for instance, is dense with phrases resembling OBESE, BANKRUPT, ELDER, and HOMELESS and is positioned in direct dialogue with a glowing neon sculpture Intent (2023) by Francine Hunter McGivern hung excessive up on the wall simply above it. Three small coloured pencil-on-paper sculptures by Matt LaFleur that re-present kitchen familiars resembling McCormick Meals Coloring (2017) and Bell’s Seasoning (2017) immediately gained me over. Daring, vivid work by Chris Pennock, Sue Muskat, and Geoff Younger are literal visions of textual content as full disclosure—Muskat’s Timeless and Untrammeled (2022) solicits a smile together with her repetition of “you once more” because the chorus—whereas extra esoteric works by Richard Saja and Joan Grubin use textual content as a murky car for alteration and inquiry.

Iggy Pop Reminder #2 (Each Loser Wants a Little bit of Pleasure), Chris Pennock, acrylic and gesso on wooden, 2023

Motley group reveals usually sing an unanticipated music, even with a conceptual motif to steer the melody, and with “Textual content,” a pleasing poetics fills the room. Two ink-on-paper drawings by Evan McGraw, Thick (2023) and Ligature (2023), exhibit the misplaced artwork of beautiful penmanship, whereas two acrylic and pen on wooden panel work by Fern Apfel, Dearest Honey (2023) and 9 January (2019), disclose the meticulous nature of letters because the intimate keepers of biographies and confessions. Two material items, ouch (2012) and TOUCH (2012), by Cynthia Atwood show that thread by no means goes out of fashion, and among the many extra bold text-based explorations are paper-cast items by Pamela Lawton, who engages with road graffiti to realize her sunk-relief impact in works resembling Ghost (2023).

Wolf states that textual content as medium or topic in artwork has him for the reason that Nineteen Seventies, when he grew to become conscious of Pop Artwork, concrete poetry, Egyptian hieroglyphs, illuminated manuscripts, Cubism, collage, and a various world of indicators and semiotics. His curatorial effort reveals his adoration of textual content as an indispensable darling of artwork and life, certainly adored by all. A dynamic group exhibition resembling this one presents the not possible process of summarizing a bevy of flirtatious artworks inside a word-count restrict, alas the confines of textual content! Nonetheless, the moments recounted herein are a mere slice of the enjoyable. This exhibition expresses a sort of “we’re all feeling the identical factor” by means of phrases as textual content, and textual content because the ineffable passage from one thought to the following, as we revisit meanings and their means advert infinitum.
